NG: The Watch fascinate me. You get to do hardboiled police procedurals while still writing funny smart books set in a fantastic world.

TP: On a point of order, Mister Gaiman, the world in which Sam Vimes finds himself is hardly fantastic. Okay, there are goblins, but the overall ambience is that of the shires of Middle England. It’s all about the commonality of humankind. Shove Sam Vimes into a situation that has gone toxic and away he goes, as realistic as any other policeman and thinking in the very same ways and being Sam Vimes, questioning his motives and procedures all the way through.

More owls slowly appeared on J.K. Rowling’s YouTube channel as the countdown ticked closer to the deadline today. After the clock reached zero, a video was uploaded with an announcement.

Pottermore, as it turns out, is not a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, sadly. It might be the next best thing, though. Pottermore.com will be, come October, a “unique and free-to-use website which builds an exciting online experience” around the Harry Potter series. It will be something of an interactive web game full of unpublished material from Harry Potter.

The author has written thousands of words of new material “about the characters, places and objects in the much-loved stories, which will inform, inspire and entertain readers as they journey through the storylines of the books.

The website will also later serve as an exclusive place to purchase and download the novels in ebook and audio book form, without annoying DRM.

Garth Nix is currently writing Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen, the much-awaited sequel to the Old Kingdom Trilogy (first book: Sabriel). He is currently estimating a 2013 release date.

I’m writing CLARIEL: THE LOST ABHORSEN at the moment. It is set about 300 years before the events of SABRIEL, in an extremely settled era of the Old Kingdom, where is almost no threat from the Dead or Free Magic, and the Abhorsens are considered something between an archaic remnant of worse times and municipal rat-catchers. Clariel will probably be a 2013 release.

The Old Kingdom Trilogy is set in a thrilling fantasy world featuring undead-creating necromancers fought by a mysterious figure known as the Abhorsen—whose duty is to undo their workings and enforce the magical Charter.

Information about Brandon Sanderson’s new Mistborn novel are starting to surface. The Alloy of Law, set 300 years after the Mistborn trilogy, is set in a world transforming from a medieval-style setting to something more along the lines of the 1800s. Electric lighting and railroads have come to Scadrial, but the Allomancers and Feruchemists haven’t gone anywhere. (Sanderson, on Twitter, was talking about writing a Mistborn gunfight…)

Tor has posted the cover art as well as a short synopsis over at Tor.com.

The fourth Mistborn book is currently scheduled for a November release, and the author has hinted about plans for three more to follow.
